Displaced Groove - Sunnyside

Displaced Groove

Drum Lesson by Alain Rieder

Mike Stern - Between The Lines

Track 01: Sunnyside
Drums: Dave Weckl

This lesson is an example of a displaced groove pattern, created and played by Dave Weckl in this Mike Stern CD.
Here's a short excerpt from the song:

Example 1
Here is the main basic pattern:

Example 2
Here I displaced all the notes from the bass-drum & snare-drum pattern to make them start on the first beat, which means that now the whole pattern starts half of a beat earlier.
Let's say the pattern is now in its fundamental position and becomes a much more usual type of groove.

Example 3
Here is the first element of the pattern, both in its fundamental and displaced states.

Example 4
Now the second element of the pattern, both in its fundamental and displaced states:

Example 5
And now the third element of the pattern, both in its fundamental and displaced states:

16-bar Groove Exercise
This exercise serves the purpose of integrating the main basic pattern.
Each Measure is played twice.

This exercise can be worked on with my innovative Pattern Morphing concept.

16 patterns can become 256 patterns of 2 measures.
